Thanksgiving 2011

10 Oct

It’s Thanksgiving! This means rounds and rounds of turkey, stuffing, gravy, roasted vegetables and pie. Well, that’s the traditional Thanksgiving feast. At my residence, we don’t always sit on the traditional side. And that’s what I love about it; we can pretty much keep whatever we want traditional and have anything else we feel like.

Since I was in charge of cooking dinner, I decided to make just a few instead of a slew of dishes. Plus the kitchen ain’t big enough for 2 cooks. This year, we had Turkey (with Stuffing of course), Mashed Yams with Roasted Garlic, and Rotini with Chicken and Scallops in Tomato and Cream Sauce. For dessert, I decided to make an easy one – Affogato with chopped Walnuts.

Apologies for the lack of pictures. I don’t really like taking pictures while I’m working in the kitchen. I’m too focused on what I’m doing to snap images.

Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving!

First post!

For my first entry, I decided that I want to give a little more information (how much more information can one give, sheesh) about myself and what my interests are and what I do for a living. Ok maybe not. This isn’t a dating site and I don’t want to bore you with material irrelevant to food. Maybe a few facts in point form then? Relevancy to food = 100%

  1. One of the things I wanted to be when I grew up was a chef. The precise moment this happened was when I was watching Barney (and his gang of friends) sing about what kids can choose to be when they grow up. Long story short, that’s where it all started for me. A kid’s show.
  2. I was in a group called “Young Chef’s Club” in sixth grade. We barely cooked anything, but I felt superior to anyone who wasn’t in the club. They can’t cook, I can. Oh how naïve..
  3. In tenth grade, I chose Foods as one of my electives. Probably one of my favourite classes.
  4. Food Network is one of my favourite channels. By instinct, I always default-press “052” on the remote.
  5. I dream of eating at The French Laundry one day.
  6. In chef school, my colleagues were always trying to work at lightning speed. After I roll my eyes (they really overdid it), I would chop parsley at lightning speed, de-bone a chicken at lightning speed or whatever. This prompts some of them to realize what they’re doing and slow down to avoid injury, and prompts others to yell “IRON CHEF!”
  7. If  I can pick anyone’s brain in the culinary world, dead or living, I’d select Auguste Escoffier. After I kindly ask him to cook something for me of course.
  8. I don’t have a well-developed palette, nor do I claim to have one. I won’t use any big words to describe what I taste. I’ll just tell it as it is, in plain English.
  9. I also dream of eating at Guy Savoy one day. In Paris; not so much Vegas.
  10. I love taking pictures of food. It’s a known fact that we eat with our eyes first. Anything that looks good, (hopefully but usually) tastes good.
  11. People think that because I went to culinary school, I’m some sort of gourmet connoisseur. News flash: I’m not. I’m still learning. I am a curious soul among men.
  12. I LOVE cooking with garlic. When a recipe reads two cloves of garlic, I chop six. My fingers and nails might stink, but I don’t care. Garlic adds so much flavour into a dish. Just the best.
  13. Some of my favourite Food Network personalities include Nigella Lawson, David Rocco, Giada de Laurentiis, Robert Irvine, Michael Chiarello, Anne Burrell, Ina Garten, Laura Calder, Lynn Crawford, and Tyler Florence.
  14. I would love to hang out with Julia Child. Just talk about food, sip tea, possibly bake a custard right after. How delightful.
  15. I don’t have any more random facts, but I don’t like ending at 14. My OCD will not be pleased.
So much for point form. You’ll find that I lie stretch the truth quite a bit. Not for personal gain… well sometimes.
Anyway I hope that’s good for a first post. The next one will actually include food and pictures!
